If you're like many dog owners, the thought of hiring a #DogWalker has probably crossed your mind! Let's take a look at how exactly a dog walker will make your life easier. First of all, hiring a dog walker will help put your mind at ease, (& who doesn't need more ease in their busy life?). You get to focus on your work, while knowing that your fur baby is not lonely or bored. Your doggo gets to have fun, exercise, & is well cared for... so you can come home to a happy dog instead of a mess!
Dogs crave social interaction, brain stimulation, & exercise. Just a quick walk around the neighborhood provides a much needed break in your dog's day, not to mention, getting to go to the bathroom! During their walk they get to stimulate their brains by exploring the sounds & smells of the neighborhood, which actually helps curb unwanted behavioral issues that can arise in bored dogs!
Another important (& probably more obvious) benefit which comes from using a dog walker is... MORE EXERCISE!! Many dog breeds such as #Vizslas, #Labradors, #GoldenRetrievers, #GermanShepherds, #BostonTerriers, & more, need more exercise than other breeds. Regular walks help to improve their overall health & wellness. What happens when they don't get enough exercise? In addition to health issues, doggos may begin to exhibit unwanted destructive behaviors such as barking, indoor marking, digging, chewing, & sometimes even aggression. Often times these dogs are labeled as "bad dogs," when in fact they are really just BORED dogs!
In addition to allowing for socialization, potty breaks, & exercise; dog walkers can be an important second set of eyes on your pet. Due to our vast experience with being around pets, CPR certifications, & other educational trainings- dog walkers are often times the first to notice that your beloved doggo may be sick or in distress, which allows us to help you make sure your pet gets the care they need.
Here are some helpful things to keep in mind when hiring a dog walker:
Look At Your Schedule
Determine how often you will require the services of a dog walker. You may find that you want weekday lunch time walks, or need to keep the option for an open-ended or last-minute variable schedule.
Meet The Sitter
I always recommend setting up an interview, or meet & greet as we in the biz like to call it, so we can come meet you & your dog. Most walkers prefer to come to your home so they can get the lay of the land, but if you'd prefer, don't hesitate to ask to meet first at a neutral location such as a park. Pay attention to how your dog interacts with the potential walker, & don't forget to listen to your gut! Do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have. We love animals, & are happy to help put your mind at ease. (I am a complete mess when I have to leave our kitty. So believe me, I get it!!)
Details, Details, Details
Make sure your potential dog walker has virtual report card technology, or is willing to leave you notes regarding your pet's activities: ie., did your doggo go potty, did anything out of the ordinary happen, etc.
Safety First
Don't be afraid to check out their reviews, or ask for references. Not only will your dog walker be responsible for your fur baby, they will also have access to your home. Many dog walkers have references, background checks, & insurance available.
Be proud of yourself for taking such good care of your doggo, & doing your research first! Don't forget to trust your gut, even if it means taking more time to do some extra interviews! Your fur baby's health & well being is the most important thing.
